Currently, 45% of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Seventy-five percent of adolescent pregnancies in the United States are unplanned and account for approximately 15% of all unplanned pregnancies. Economically disadvantaged women are affected at a rate of more than 5 times the rate among women with an income greater than 200% of poverty.
In 2010, 53% of all pregnancies (115,000) in Pennsylvania were unplanned. The unplanned pregnancy rate for women aged 15-44 was 47 per 1,000 and those aged 15-19 was 35 per 1,000. Fifty-two percent of unplanned pregnancies in Pennsylvania resulted in births and 35% in abortions; the remainder resulted in miscarriages.
Sixty-three percent of women who choose abortion make this decision because they are unable to afford a child (23%), would be raising the child as a single parent (8%), are not ready for a child (25%) or feel they are incapable of raising a child (7%).
Our Pregnancy Care Centers offer trained client advocates who are available to meet with women facing unplanned pregnancies in Blair, Bedford and Cambria County. We offer free pregnancy testing, options education, the Earn While You Learn Program, and community referrals for housing, financial support, and medical care. The Precious Life Pregnancy Care Centers are stocked with supplies that include baby care essentials such as diapers, clothing, and baby furniture. There is no cost to any woman or man seeking supplies for their children and our supplies can accommodate children up to the age of 2-3 years old. All services are strictly confidential and free of charge.
Options education provides information on the three options for pregnancies; parenting the child, adoption, and abortion. Precious Life does not refer, offer, or recommend abortions, but we are committed to offering accurate information about abortion procedures and the physical and emotional risks to women that are often not provided within the mainstream women’s healthcare system.
For clients considering adoption, we partner with staff from a local adoption agency in helping her form an adoption plan. We meet regularly throughout her pregnancy during the process. Precious Life staff offers a support system most of these women do not have to address their fears, doubts, and concerns.
Your donation will assist us in keeping our stores stocked with supplies, provide training for staff and volunteers to counsel women, and operating costs of each of our pregnancy care centers. Please join us today in helping families choose life.
