Ephesians 6:11 & 12 tells us “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (ESV)
It is not hard to look around and see the devils schemes, the present darkness of this world, and the battles among us.
When we think more specifically about the battle of abortion – it’s easy to get indignant, or grief stricken with the views that abortion should be allowed, or feel heavy-hearted over the 60 million babies that have died since 1973. However, as Paul reminds us in these very verses, our battle is against “spiritual forces of evil.” Often, I believe we forget this. We believe our battles are against one another. Our words become full of anger and hate. We become enraged when we see the news surrounding what feels like the fight to keep killing innocent lives. While righteous anger has its place, we don’t always allow spiritual weapons to guide us in the fight. In these moments, we fall to our own flesh and believe we can fight these battles on on our own.
If we back up to verse 10 of chapter 6, we are reminded to “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” Paul is reminding us that without the Lord’s strength and might, we cannot fight these battles on our own. We must rely on Him. So, how do we do that? Verse 11 encourages us to “Put on the whole armor of God.” Ephesians 6:14-17 walks us through exactly what is the armor of God. It is the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes fitted with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Verse 18 then states “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.” Praying at all times. Similarly, Paul also tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “pray without ceasing.” When we are up against the battles of this world, we must be reminded that praying isn’t an afterthought. It is an essential weapon to use in the battle.
This is no different with the battle of abortion. We are to fight with the whole Armor of God and always be praying.
This is why we are asking you to join us in praying daily at 1:39pm for the fight against abortion. If we look at any Scripture that depicts God’s love for the unborn child, it’s Psalm 139. The hope with 1:39pm is that it will bring Psalm 139 to your mind to be praying for the unborn who face the possibility of their life ending due to abortion. We also ask for you to be praying for all those who have been impacted by abortion. The impacts of abortion run deep and many need healing.
